Unplug in the Lost Sierra: What to Explore Right Now
When you step out onto your private balcony at the Carriage House Inn and listen to the rushing waters of the Downie River below, it is easy to see why the Lost Sierra remains one of Northern California's best-kept secrets.
Tucked away in historic Downieville, our inn sits right in the heart of a quiet mountain paradise surrounded by granite peaks, crystal-clear streams, and untouched forests. Whether you are spending your days tackling rugged singletrack or simply unwinding with a book on the riverbank, the region offers an authentic escape that feels worlds away from everyday stress.
Here is what you can experience in the Lost Sierra right from our doorstep.
1. World-Class Trails for Every Trail User
The Lost Sierra has earned a legendary reputation among mountain bikers, hikers, and off-road enthusiasts, largely thanks to the trail builders and advocates working across the region.
If you are looking for dirt, singletrack, or multi-day backcountry adventures, head straight to the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship’s Connected Communities Routes. Through their ambitious Connected Communities project, an initiative connecting 15 mountain towns across 527 miles of multi-use trails, you can access curated, downloadable routes designed for a variety of pursuits:
- Bikepacking & Gravel Riding: Tackle iconic multi-day loops like the Lost Sierra Loop or the high-desert terrain of Sagebrush to Snowbanks.
- Mountain Biking: Shuttle classic, heart-pumping singletrack drops in Downieville and Quincy, or take on the expansive Mount Hough Trail Network.
- Motopacking & OHV Trails: Access hundreds of miles of dual-sport dirt roads and rugged backways connecting national forest lands.
- Backpacking & Hiking: Access scenic high-country trails, including stunning stretches of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) as it meanders through local mountain passes.
Before heading out, be sure to check current trail conditions and download active GPX tracks directly from the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship route portal.
2. Alpine Lakes & Mountain Recreation
If you prefer a slower pace or want to pair a morning trail ride with an afternoon swim, the Lakes Basin Recreation Area is hard to beat. Home to over 20 small alpine lakes, it is an ideal spot for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or quiet shoreline fishing.
For dramatic views, take the classic day hike up to the Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout. Perched at over 8,500 feet, the historic lookout offers panoramic views across the entire Sierra Nevada range and down over Sardine Lake.
3. Historic Towns, Local Food, & Mountain Hospitality
A huge part of the Lost Sierra experience happens in the small communities dotting the valleys. Towns like Downieville, Sierra City, Quincy, and Graeagle offer a welcoming mix of independent coffee shops, craft breweries, historic saloons, and family-owned lodges.
When planning your stay, local dining, and regional events, turn to Visit Sierra County. They provide helpful local travel guides, lodging options, and seasonal updates to ensure you get the most out of your visit while supporting local businesses along the way.
Tips for Your Trip
- Plan Ahead: Cell service can be spotty once you hit the backcountry. Download your maps and route files from Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship while you still have coverage.
- Leave No Trace: Help keep these mountains pristine by packing out all trash, staying on designated trails, and respecting local wildlife.
- Support Local: Small mountain towns rely heavily on responsible tourism. Grab lunch at a local cafe, gear up at a neighborhood shop, and consider supporting local trail efforts during your visit.
